On 16th January, 1906, The Inaugural Meeting was held at Chotanagpur Mounted Rifles Club, Asansol. Sir Andrew Fraser, Lt. Governor of Bengal, Mr. E. H. Walsh, Commissioner of Burdwan and Chairman of Mining Board and 80 original members traveled by a special train from Calcutta to attend the Inaugural meeting. Mr. T. H. Holland, the Director, Geological Survey of India, was elected the first President of the Institute and Mr. W. H. Pickering, the Chief Inspector of Mines, was elected the first Hony. Secretary. The Governor General of India had also consented to support the movement by being Patron.
The Institute was incorporated under the Indian Companies Act, 1882, on the 16th Sept. 1909. By a special resolution in an Extraordinary General meeting of the Members of the Institute held on 22nd October, 1937, the word “Metallurgical” was added in the Institute’s name and thus the Institute was renamed as “The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI)”.
OBJECTIVES
The Institute was established in 1906 with the object of promoting "the study of all branches of mining methods and of mineral occurrences in India, with a view to disseminating the information for facilitating the economic development of the mineral industries in the country".
